Spring Classics Are Here
The pro cycling season has been underway, but this weekend is the start of the true Spring Classics with the Tour of Flanders on Sunday. These one day races that go throughout the rest of the month take place where cycling was born - across Belgium, Netherlands, and Northern France. They are hard, gutsy races that say a lot about who wins and not much about who may win the big stage races later in the season.
Weather, in particular, has a big influence on the races. Anything from rain, to snow, to wind, and certainly muddy roads are common. Historically, cobblestone routes were part of many of the races too, but it seems that the cobbles may be on their way out. I will have to tune in to know how much of the courses have been changed to handle or leave out the cobblestones.
For a list of the teams starting Sunday's race; see Velo News at http://www.velonews.com You can also check out their live race coverage online.
Who are the favorites to win? Well, one famous name that is on the start line that is not favored is Lance Armstrong. Discovery Channel is lining up, but they won't be racing for Lance. More than likely, a Belgian or Scandanavian racer will come out on top. Don't ask me my picks; I can't even pronounce these names. Just check out the link and see how well everyone does to stay on their bike and maybe threaten!
