1 $US good for 1 Euro

Yes, its a promotion, because reality isn't so good. But at least for Americans they can get a good buy on hotels in the WorldHotels program where a 200 euro room costs $200US. This offer can't be booked online apparently, you have to call the number 800-223-5652 and the caveat is that the stay must be Mon-Thurs to be applicable. Must be booked and traveled by Aug 31.

If you try it out, note that the hotels are mostly deluxe 4 star or better hotels. Therefore the savings could be significant, but you will still spend some money! If you are Canadian or other, perhaps you can find a way to call that 800 number and book as if you were American?

Eiffel Tower To Undergo Improvements

The Eiffel Tower has over 7 million visitors per year and is one of the most visited sites in France. In order to cut down on lines and time waiting to get on the tower, changes are planned to fix the wait problem. Advance online reservations will be put into place as well as more concessions. Changes will start taking place this fall.

Cycling the Luberon of Provence

As told by returning customer Honi Edmondson:

"The Luberon Biking Tour is the second tour that my husband, Mike, and I have taken with Pure Adventures. As with our previous tour, the standard of accommodation, quality of meals and efficiency of luggage transfer cannot be faulted. But what we most enjoy is that the hotels are not large, impersonal and ultra-modern monoliths, but are small establishments that radiate tranquility and charm. We often feel that two or three days are not enough in each of them. Two or three weeks would be better, and we find it hard to move on.

Our especial favorite is the Hotel Des Pins in Bedoin. Nestled among the pines at the foot of Mt Ventoux, it is the perfect base from which to explore the Giant himself, and the surrounding region. To the East are the Dentelles and the vineyards of Beaumes-De-Venise and Gigondas; to the West lie the dramatic Gorges of the Nesque. Whilst the 20+km bike ride along the Gorges may not be as challenging as an ascent of Mt Ventoux, it is still challenging enough. But the spectacular views from the lookout are certainly well worth it – that’s if you can muster up the energy to look! And then there’s the thrill of the 30 – 40 minute descent, hoping that your brakes won’t burn out just as you’re rounding a hairpin bend.

Whist at Bedoin, we also had the excitement of getting caught up in a massive bike event that had been organized by a Belgian company. Apparently this takes place every year, and some 1500-2000 cyclists attempt the three way ascent of Ventoux, either as teams or individual entrants, and on an astonishing variety of bikes. We were amazed to see state-of-the-art light weight racers vying for position with pre-WW2 models with shopping baskets fixed to their handlebars. For avid cyclists such as Mike and myself, this was the cycling equivalent to Heaven. Indeed, my husband was so enthused that he and a friend have determined to enter this event themselves next year. Its things like this, the totally unexpected, that so often make cycling Provence a truly unique experience.

The final tribute that I have to pay is to our Eddy Merckx CHM bikes. They never missed a beat, and were a real pleasure to ride. Needless to say, they were an ideal way to experience the beauty of the French countryside, and often proved to be an opening point for conversation at our many coffee breaks. So much did I come to love my bike, and was so reluctant to part from it, that on my return home I consoled myself with purchasing a new Merckx SXM.”

2008 Rates on Tours for 2009 Bookings

Inquiries for 2009 are starting in earnest as people are trying to take advantage of airfare well in advance. As an incentive to those who want to book early, we are offering 2008 rates for 2009 bookings as long as tours are booked before we announce 2009 rates. We usually announce next season rates by mid-October each year. That leaves several months still for those planning now!

Epic Day on the Tour de France

The Tour is all aflutter again this year, so many leaders, and so many unexpected persons in yellow. Its kind of fun to watch though since its hard to know who might emerge on any stage. Just when you think someone should be attacking, it isn't and it is someone else. Team CSC is either very crafty, or rather screwed up. Today's stage traded their tour leader to another team mate as tour leader. Carlos Sastre took off and finished well in front of everyone else including his teammates the Schleck bros. Apparently, the brothers were ok with it, and drove their mini group hard to give Sastre an advantage. The time trial will put the nail in this one if Sastre can hold off Evans to less than his minute plus advantage.

A report on NPR today played nicely, but not surprisingly the report had to include a mention of the few doping problems on this year's tour. As far as I'm concerned, its a non-issue. The cheaters have been caught and thrown out, and it has hardly deterred the ambiance. In fact, I would say that this year's tour is much less about doping than any recent memory.

Out of the Way B&B

Looking for a an "out of the way getway" for the family in France? I stayed at the perfect little chambre d'hote near Lunel and just minutes from the beach. The place offers a pool and the owner Sylvie speaks excellent English from her days living and studying in the USA. Best of all, Sylvie has a detached apartment that can sleep up to 9 people. It has its own little terrace and large living space. I plan to take my family back here in the future. Here is the website:

Mountain Biking in South of France

Mountain biking in Montpellier area :

I was at our office in France last week and we hit the trails in the area around Lunel and Sommieres. Actually, the area is loaded with trails for anyone of any ability. Thomas, who runs our France office and his brother Thibaut who is the lead mechanic and a Cat 1 mountain biker ride this area all the time. Their local club just had a guy finish 11th in the World Cup! So, we went out for a little spin on Sunday to check it out. It was a mix of single track and jeep trails. The single track was great, and offered moderate to very challenging rides with some technical stuff a little beyond my level!

Nonetheless, the variety is fantastic and the nearby seaside makes it a perfect getaway. Look for some new guided mountain biking trips next year! We will also add some guided mountain biking in the Mont Ventoux area where Thomas and one of our guides Julien have done a lot of racing and training.

The best part is after the ride; we went to a nearby village on market day and picked up some fresh products and sat down at a cafe with some chilled Rose! Ah, la vie francaise!
